Data Driven Coaching - Stryd Running Edition

I recently sent an e-mail to one of our athletes and thought it would be a good way to start off the blog section of our website. Most of you who have worked with me in one capacity or another know that I am a very data driven coach. I don’t think this is better or worse than other coaching styles, but I am here today to try and proved to you why it can be incredibly beneficial…

The Importance of the Menstrual Cycle on Training and Racing

Coaches, let me ask you a question. Do you talk with your athletes about their period? Can you even say the word "period" or "menstruation" without blushing and lowering your voice to an inaudible whisper? If not, there is a big f---ing problem and we need to change that, immediately. Athletes, this is important for you as well because your time of menstruation will have an enormous impact on your training, nutrition and performance, regardless of your level of fitness. Only recently have professional athletes begun to talk about menstruation in the public eye and it is unfortunately met with discomfort and we need to change that.

Paleo Energy Bars

For those of you who know me know that I am not the best cook/food preparer. It's unfortunate, because I tend to really enjoy myself... when I force myself to do it. With my dramatic reduction in training volume due to the off season and the birth of Charlie, I have been attempting to follow a more strict eating regimen. It's way too early to get a "Dad's Bod". I have toyed with many "diets" over the years, where I adhere for a few months and assess my general feeling (i.e. body composition, energy levels, mood, recovery, clearness of thought, etc.). I have tried vegetarian, vegan, raw (one of the shortest), paleo, high-fat/low carb and many more which I can address in another blog post. In my experience one of the best overall in terms of the criteria listed above, has been the paleo diet. I think this is due to the fact that you aren't necessarily restricting any macromolecules, you are just choosing to obtain them from high quality, natural and healthy sources.

ENERGYbits® Algae Bites

I originally heard about ENERGYbits® on the Ben Greenfield podcast. Ben Greenfield continually mentions that he pops these little nutrient dense bits like popcorn, with nothing but good things to say... Minus the mouth changing green color they typically leave behind if you dare to chew them. ENERGYbits® is a flourishing company based out of Boston, MA. and they are trying to make algae a common household vegetable in North America. Catharine Arnston, the CEO and CSO of ENERGYbits®, is a board certified health councillor in nutrition and also recently appeared on the Ben Greenfield podcast. After listening to the interview, I decided to give these supposed miracle veggies, which have been researched by both the UN and NASA, a try (partly because Catharine and I share a similar Canadian heritage). The following post is a combination of what I have learnt through that interview, my own personal trial and a further deep dive into the literature on these prehistoric plants (or technically bacteria in spirulina's case).

Ironman 70.3 St. George - Race Recap

I want to start by saying that I am incredibly happy with the Ironman 70.3 St. George race, overall. I am beyond happy with St. George as a destination and community because I received nothing but great customer service and friendly conversation.  I even had a few honks of support while out on training rides and runs leading up to the race (at least I think they were of support).

Sodium Bicarbonate and Muscular Fatigue - An Experiment

Recently, I was listening to Ben Greenfield and heard him mention his use of Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in a glass of water every morning because of it's alkalinizing properties. He also mentioned the use of NaHCO3 as an ergogenic aid for high intensity endurance athletes. Theoretically, this makes a lot of sense to me. So, I decided to self experiment and want to tell you about my experience. Some necessary disclaimers here... Yes, I am a molecular biologist by training and run experiments for a living... But this is by no means a controlled setting. My sample size is 1 and the data has not been replicated. The design was not blinded and I have no controls, positive or negative. Finally, this is by no means my area of "expertise". This is not a true experiment but just an anecdote of my experience toying with exercise.
