Who is Coach Tom?
Who am I? In short, I am a competitive Canadian boy transplanted to New York City because of work. How will this not make for an interesting blog, right?
I grew up on a beautiful piece of property in Canada with two older brothers who I still consider my best friends. We were a pretty athletic family growing up, constantly playing sports through school and after hours in our home town. We would throw the baseball and football around, play soccer, fight, do all the things you would expect young hooligans to do. This included a day where we donned motorcycle helmets and threw wooden building blocks at each other until one skipped off my brothers helmet shattering our bay window... That game never happened again. Even still, my childhood was pretty "run of the mill" so I won't talk much about ithere. I am sure you can piece it together from the other posts I will be making.
I graduated high school with decent grades and moved away to University (college for my American readers) at the age of 17. College was a ton of fun, but this is not the time or place for those stories. I graduated with a degree in Honours Genetics and proceeded to complete my Master's degree in Molecular Biology. That's right, I am the nerdy scientist type, through and through.
After presenting my graduate research in Florida, I interviewed for a Pharmaceutical company in New York. Viola! That's how I arrived here. Fast forward 5 years later and I am incredibly happy with how my life is unfolding. I have an incredible dog and a beautiful fiancée. Walter, our three year-old retired racing greyhound, is the laziest of the three of us. It's alright though, he was a champion and did his time. Not to mention, he can get by on his regal good looks. My fiancée, Tiffany, is what makes life worth living. She has changed my life in uncountable ways and is by my side through everything I do, including these upcoming Ironman races which we will be running together.
I didn't always have such a positive view on the world. In this first year of living in New York, things were pretty difficult. Living in a world of home sickness and being moderately awkward in a city where you don't know anyone can really take a toll on the human body. Emotionally I was rough but physically, it was much easier to see. Within the first year of my relocation, I had put on a little over 40 lbs. On a 5'8" frame, that is no small feat. One day, and I remember this vividly, I looked in the mirror and realized I was a different person but that is a whole other post in itself.
So welcome to Tri and Tri! Where I am hoping to inspire and informabout healthy living while encouraging the next generation of triathletes. I have a deep interest in exercise, exercise physiology and nutrition. I hope that I can help shed some light on an incredibly complex topic in an interesting way. Follow me while I train for my first Ironman 70.3 and Ironman 140.6. You can read anything including my rants and product reviews, how I try to fit in a social life while training, daily workouts (including the times I posted for the competitive reader), recipes we try, or interesting scientific articles in the field of exercise physiology. You can read along, knowing that I have likely experienced some similar trials and tribulations. Enjoy!
